Abstract

One of the principal sources of the underlying philosophical consciousness in Rabindranath Tagore’s poetry and music is the Upanishadic vision of the universe. However, Upanishadic philosophy does not appear in his creative works merely as a repetition of a classical philosophical doctrine; rather, it is transformed into a distinctive aesthetic experience through individual selfhood, nature, love, beauty, joy, and human relationships. The primary objective of this paper is to present a conceptual analysis of Tagore’s philosophical and aesthetic journey from ‘Brahma-consciousness’ to ‘universal consciousness’. It examines how Tagore reconstructed the Upanishadic concepts of Brahman, the Self, bliss, unity, and universal kinship, and how these ideas became perceptible and experiential through his poetry and music. Drawing particularly on Gitanjali, Sadhana, selected poems, and Rabindra Sangeet, the paper demonstrates that, for Tagore, the realization of the Infinite does not imply the annihilation of the self. Rather, it represents a process of transcending the limitations of the individual self and establishing meaningful relationships with humanity, nature, and the world. In his aesthetics, ‘joy’ is therefore not merely personal happiness but a creative experience of realizing the inherent unity among seemingly separate beings. The paper also examines the limitations of Tagore’s concept of universal consciousness and raises the question of how far universal humanism can adequately address the specific realities of social, political, and historical inequalities. Finally, it argues that Tagore’s Upanishadic aesthetics can still provide a meaningful intellectual foundation for contemporary environmental consciousness, intercultural dialogue, humane coexistence, and holistic educational thought.

Abstract in Bengali Language:
